Insurance, made clearer
Using your insurance for therapy in Washington
You have health insurance. The next step is finding out how it can help you start therapy—with a clinician, a cost and a schedule that work for you.
General information to help you prepare for care; your clinician and plan determine your individual options.
Start with your exact plan, check the individual clinician’s network participation, and confirm your outpatient mental health benefits. An insurer’s logo alone does not tell you what a session will cost.
1. Start with your plan—not just the logo
If your coverage comes through work, find your current insurance card and the plan’s benefits summary. Note the insurer, exact plan or network name, and any separate company listed for behavioral health benefits. Two people with the same employer—or the same insurance brand—can have different networks and costs.
Marketplace plans are insurance, too. They include mental health benefits, but their provider networks and cost sharing can differ from an employer plan carrying the same insurer’s name. Apple Health / Medicaid is a separate program; select the option that matches your actual coverage.
Washington’s Office of the Insurance Commissioner explains that employer plans may be insured or self-funded, with different oversight. If you need help understanding which type you have, ask your benefits administrator. Read the OIC’s employer-plan guidance.
2. Check the clinician as well as the practice
A practice may accept your insurer while only certain clinicians participate in your particular plan. Start on the relevant Arcadia insurance page, then compare clinician profiles and current openings. Our intake team will confirm the details before care begins.
When you contact your insurer, ask whether the specific clinician and billing practice are in network for your plan and for online outpatient psychotherapy. Check whether referrals or prior authorization are needed. Keep the date and reference number for the conversation so you can refer back to what you were told.
“I’m considering online outpatient psychotherapy with this clinician at Arcadia Psychotherapy in Washington. Can you check the exact network, any authorization requirements and my expected share of the cost?”
3. Understand what you may pay
Your premium keeps your insurance active; it does not necessarily cover the full price of each visit. The terms below help you ask more precise questions.
- Deductible
- The amount you may need to pay for covered care before your plan starts paying, subject to the plan’s rules.
- Copay
- A fixed amount for a covered visit. Ask whether it applies before or after your deductible.
- Coinsurance
- Your percentage of the plan’s allowed cost for a covered service, often after a deductible.
Ask about the first appointment and ongoing visits, the deductible amount remaining, and whether telehealth changes your benefits. Any estimate should be checked against your exact coverage; a benefits quote is not a guarantee that a claim will be paid. HealthCare.gov’s coverage glossary explains these terms in more detail.
4. Turn your research into a request
Have your plan name, preferred clinician and a few workable time windows ready. You can view current openings or use the therapist finder to narrow the choices, then submit an appointment request. If a listed time does not work, include your broader availability.
Selecting a time and submitting the form does not book the appointment. Intake will email from information@arcadiawa.com within 24 business hours to confirm details. Check your inbox and spam folder, and reply so we can finalize scheduling.
If coverage is denied or you cannot find an appropriate in-network provider, contact your insurer and ask about your options. The Washington OIC’s mental health coverage resources explain rights and where to get help.
Clear costs before your first appointment
Apple Health / Medicaid members pay $0 for covered therapy appointments at Arcadia with a participating clinician. No credit card is required on file during Medicaid intake. We confirm your active plan and clinician eligibility before care begins.
For commercial insurance, marketplace plans or private pay, we verify and explain all out-of-pocket costs before your first appointment, including any copay, deductible, coinsurance or session rate.
Explore your insurance options
Start with the page for your plan, then check participating clinicians and current openings. Exact coverage is confirmed before care.

Does Arcadia accept employer and marketplace plans?
Participating clinicians accept several commercial and marketplace plans. The exact plan, network and clinician must be checked; acceptance of an insurer does not mean every product it offers is in network.
Can I know my exact copay from the insurer’s name?
No. Your benefit design, deductible and the clinician’s network status affect your share. Ask your insurer and intake to confirm the details before your first appointment.
What if my insurance changes during therapy?
Tell intake before the next visit and provide the new plan information through the requested secure process. A new plan may have a different network or deductible, even if the insurer’s name stays the same.
